Make

Ingredients

  • foxtail millet — 3/4 cup
  • toor (red gram) dal — 1/4 cup
  • mixed vegetables — 2 cups (carrot, drumstick, beans, onion)
  • dried red chillies — 4
  • tamarind extract — 3 tsp
  • sambar powder — 20 g
  • curry leaves — 2 sprigs
  • coriander leaves — 4 tsp (chopped)
  • mustard seeds — 1/4 tsp
  • cumin seeds (used in the method; no quantity given)
  • turmeric powder — 1/4 tsp
  • asafoetida (a pinch)
  • water — 4 cups
  • oil and ghee (as required)
  • salt (to taste)

Method

  1. Put the millet, toor dal, turmeric and salt in a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water and cook for 5-6 whistles.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and fry the mustard seeds, cumin, red chillies and curry leaves for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Stir in the chopped vegetables with the sambar powder and tamarind extract and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
  4. Add the cooked millet and dal and simmer together, stirring, until the mixture is soft and well blended.
  5. Spoon into a serving bowl, add a little ghee on top and scatter the chopped coriander. Serve hot.

Tips

  • General practice: add a splash of water while the vegetables cook if the pan starts to catch.
