Make

Ingredients

  • barnyard millet (bhagar) — 50 g (soaked overnight and drained)
  • oil — 20 ml
  • cumin seeds — 5 g
  • curry leaves — 5 g
  • onions — 30 g (chopped)
  • peanuts — 20 g
  • green chillies — 20 g
  • salt — 3 g
  • water — 100 ml
  • coriander leaves — 10 g

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the cumin, curry leaves and onions. Fry them well.
  2. Add the peanuts and keep frying until they are cooked through, then add the green chillies and fry a little longer.
  3. Add the soaked bhagar and keep it moving in the pan until it takes on a little colour.
  4. Pour in the water, add the salt and cook until every bit of water has been absorbed.
  5. Finish with a generous handful of coriander leaves.

Tips

  • General practice: bhagar is a common fast-day grain in Maharashtra, but this version has onion, which many families leave out on a fast; check your own practice.
